Hiking Trails

Tonto Fish Hatchery


The fish hatchery is just off Highway 260 on the way to Christopher Creek. For a few quarters, you can feed the fish while learning about the life cycle of the trout Learn More.




Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery


Canyon Creek is popular among anglers fishing for rainbow trout. The Arizona Game and Fish Department Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery is nearby. The hatchery is open to the public and offers a self-guided tour of the facility. Wildlife includes: Abert squirrel, black bear, mountain lion, elk, turkey, and deer. Learn More.




Rancho Tonto Catch a Trout


Nestled right underneath the rim is Rancho Tonto Fishing Pond. Follow Tonto Fish Hatchery directions. “Hook em & Cook em”, fish for trout and cook what you catch. Learn More.





Tonto Natural Bridge


The largest natural travertine in the world resides just north of Payson. The bridge stands 183 feet high over a 400-foot long tunnel that measures 150 feet at its widest point. There are three hiking trails, a picnic area, and a group use area. Learn More.




Mogollon Rim Road


30 miles north of Payson. Over 7,000 feet in elevation, the rim is a 200-mile long mountain plateau. This scenic drive follows the rim 45 miles east to Highway 260. Vista points along the way provide an awesome view of the Tonto National Forest below. Fishing in the lakes along the way; picnicking, camping, boating, hiking and wildlife viewing make this an unforgettable trip.

Railroad to Nowhere


Take Forest Road 300 and stop at the head of the East Verde River. A monument to the Battle of Big Dry Wash marks the spot, along with a sign pointing to General Springs. Follow switchback trail down into the canyon, and the tunnel is hidden up to your left in a side canyon. This is a difficult hike.

Woods Canyon Lake

Willow Springs Lake


Willow Springs Lake is one of the most accessible of the Rim lakes and has a very scenic setting in a heavily forested area on the edge of the Mogollon Rim. Learn More.




Black Canyon Lake


Much like the other lakes listed above this lake is a scenic treat in the middle of the Pines. Due to a fire in the area several years ago the area has lost many trees but still remains beautiful. Black Canyon Lake is only permitted for day use at this time. Learn More.
